While light and radio waves are a single fundamental physical phenomenon, systems that see, sense, and communicate have tended to focus on one or the other. But particularly in recent years it has become clear that whether the task is seeing the world, sensing the world, or communicating in the world, light, radio, and audio’s fundamentals are leading vision and wireless communications researchers down convergent pathways of thought, utilizing similar—or in some cases identical—techniques.

The Princeton School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) announces the 2026 Inaugural Symposium of a Cluster of Excellence, Maxwell: Millimeter-Terahertz-Light Communications and Sensing. Website: https://maxwell.engineering.princeton.edu. The cluster is tightly focused, containing graphics researchers and wireless researchers whose respective labs have already dedicated significant time and resources to carefully consider the above themes. Princeton is uniquely positioned to have leading researchers in each of these areas, who together span the spectrum over millimeter wave, Terahertz, IR, visible light, and acoustics.

This one and a half day event will take place in Princeton’s campus on December 17 (all day) and 18 (morning). The program will include faculty talks, keynote talks, and invited talks and panels from researchers across the domains of academia, industry, and government. Attendees will have ample opportunities to network and discuss the day’s events. To register, please complete this form.
