Hi! I very much want to meet you. Unfortunately I get more emails than I can respond to, so to streamline the process, let's do the following:

Princeton students

  • If you’re a Princeton graduate student interested in joining or collaborating with the Visual AI Lab, please email me including a brief description of your research interests and a link to your homepage. We'll find a time to meet. You're also welcome to sign up for office hours.
  • If you're a Princeton undergraduate interested in research, please start by first doing an IW with me (details below). I'm always looking for outstanding students to engage in ongoing research projects, but the best way to find out if there's a good match is to dive in with an IW project. Students doing research in the lab will be expected to commit significant time (10-20 hours/week) and to be working towards a publishable result.
  • If you're a Princeton undergraduate interested in an IW (incl. senior thesis), please email me (1) a CV or resume, (2) a recent transcript, and (3) a brief description of the kind of projects you want to work on. Generally I'm open to advising IWs in visual recognition on images or videos, including both modeling-focused and analysis-focused explorations. I recommend you first (or concurrently) take COS 429 to have a solid foundation. I'm open to advising students from all departments although have to give preference to COS ABs and BSEs if I get too many requests. If I have the bandwidth to advise, I will then be available via email and happy to meet during office hours throughout the semester/year to support your work. I will trust you to take responsibility on managing deadlines and moving your project forward.
  • If you're a Princeton student interested in helping with the Princeton AI4ALL camp, please sign up for the mailing list and stay tuned. I'm also happy to chat in office hours.
  • If you're a Princeton student asking for a letter of recommendation, please email me (1) a draft of the materials you're submitting with your application, such as CV/resume, personal/research statement, etc. (2) an overview of your accomplishments that you'd like me to highlight, e.g., doing a great final project in COS 429 with the report attached, frequently coming to office hours along with some cool questions you've asked, etc., and (3) detailed instructions on when and where to submit the letter.
  • If you're a Princeton student with other questions, please sign up to come to office hours.

Current and former AI4ALL students

  • If you're an AI4ALL alum interested in research, please email me with a description of (1) which AI4ALL program you attended and what project you worked on, (2) your programming background, (3) any additional AI background, and (4) the time frame and expected time commitment. I'm open to taking on Changemakers in AI space permitting, but will likely recommend additional preparation (such as reading or online coursework) and will generally ask for a full-time summer commitment over 12 weeks.
  • If you're a Princeton AI4ALL student asking for a letter of recommendation, please email the Program Coordinator with (1) the year you've attended the program and the project you worked on, (2) detailed instructions on when and where to submit the letter, and (3) any involvement you've had with Changemakers in AI since the program. Put my name and the ai4all at princeton dot edu email address as your recommender.
  • If you're an AI4ALL student with other questions, please email me including the program you attended and the year.
  • If you're a Princeton AI4ALL student with other questions, you may also schedule a time to talk during office hours if you prefer instead of emailing me.

Non-Princeton or AI4ALL folks

  • If you're intersted in doing a postdoc in the Visual AI Lab, please email me with the usual CV, homepage, research objectives, etc. We're particularly looking for postdocs with expertise in video understanding and/or AI fairness.
  • If you're applying to study at Princeton, there is no need to email me. I apologize that I may not be able to respond. To ensure that I read your application, please:
      1. apply to the Princeton CS PhD program,
      2. declare a specialization in AIML or Vision, and
      3. mention my name in the application.
I look forward to meeting you once you’re admitted.
  • If you're interested in a temporary research position in the Visual AI Lab, unfortunately it is unlikely we will be able to accommodate at this time. We get many requests for visiting researchers and I’m unfortunately unable to respond to all such inquiries.
  • If you're a high school student interested in research and you have not previously attended an AI4ALL summer program, please start by applying to one of the many options.
  • If you're writing a news article about diversity/inclusion in STEM or AI please contact the folks at AI4ALL directly. They will loop me in at the right time.
