5/14/03: No scheduled office hours today or for the rest of exams period. Please email if you would like to meet. Also, be sure you have made an appointment for a discussion/demo of your project before Tuesday 5/20.

4/29/03 entry 2: A Word file containing solutions to problem set 7 is now available.

4/29/03: Extra office hours today 3pm-4pm

4/26/03: Word files containing solutions to problem set 5 and problem set 6 are now available.

4/23/03: Office hours today are canceled. There will be office hours tomorrow 2:30-3:30. Problem sets may be handed in until noon on Friday without penalty.

3/30/03: Some errata and clarifications have been added to the solutions to problem set 2.

3/27/03 entry 2: Additional project examples have been added to the project overview.

3/27/03: A project overview is now available. This is still incomplete; in particular, more examples will be added.

3/25/03: I will not hold my usual office hours 3-4pm tomorrow (Wed), but will have office hours Thursday (3/27)4:00-5:30pm and Friday (3/28) 2:30-3:30pm. As always, email me for an appointment if you would like to meet at a different time.

3/24/03 Solutions to problem set 4 are now available.

3/22/03 Exam 1 has been postponed by 1 week. If you are taking the course for credit you should have received email with details.

3/12/03 I have a meeting that may run late and prevent me from being on time for my 3-4pm office hours today. I will be available as soon as possible after 3pm, certainly by 3:30pm and will be around until at least 5pm. As always, email me if you need to see me at another time.

3/7/03 entry 2: The first take home exam will be available Tuesday, March 25 at 5pm and will be due Friday March 28 at 5pm. This exam will be open-book, but references are restricted to materials provided by the instructor and the required text by Ramakrishnan and Gehrke and the supplemental text by Silberschatz, Korth, Sudarshan.

3/7/03: Copies of all of the slides that I used for our SQL discussion are now available online as pdf. Please note that the hardcopies of some of the slides that I passed out in class have some editing errors, which are corrected in this posted version.

3/4/03 entry 2: I have been called to a meeting during my normal office hours: 3-4pm today. I will be available from 5pm- 5:40pm instead. Please send me email if you would like to see me at another time.

3/4/03: There was a problem with the CS dept studentdb database server and students were locked out of the system. This problem was corrected at about 10pm last night. The staff asks that you PLEASE CHANGE YOUR studentdb PASSWORD. If you still experience difficulties with access to studentdb, please email csstaff@cs with a cc to me. If lack of access last night will prevent you from completing the assignment by tomorrow at 11am, please email me describing the situation.

3/3/03 2:20pm: correction to reading: Chapter 9 is background reading; Chapter 8 is the assignment for tomorrow. (I originally posted the reverse. The new edition reversed the order of the chapters -- sorry.)

2/3/03 The course text Database Managment Systems has a Web home page: http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~dbbook. There you will find, among other things, solutions to the odd-numbered problems at the end of each chapter and text errata.
