Discussion of Chapter 4, Part B: Relational Calculus

See the slides in PDF format provided by the authors of our textbook. I skipped several of the slides containing example found in the textbook, specifically pages 8 and 9. You should review these. I added two slides on the formal definition of tuple relational calculus (slides in PostScript) one slide on how one does projection in tuple relational calculus (slide in PostScript), and one slide on safe relational queries.

We also did several examples on the board analogous to our examples for the relational algebra. These examples also appear in the text by Silberschatz et. al., a copy of which is on reserve at the Engineering library. Again, the query Find all customers who have accounts at all branches in Princeton was the most difficult one. I posted a discussion in an ascii file on the "what's new" Web page.
