Ron Brachman, whose background is in artificial intelligence, is the director of the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute, an academic joint venture between the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology and Cornell University, joining in 2016. He is also a professor in Cornell's Department of Computer Science. Brachman is the former chief scientist of Yahoo and the head of Yahoo Labs, a worldwide research and applied science organization.  Prior to joining Yahoo in 2005, he was the director of the Information Processing Technology Office (IPTO) at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). He led a new revitalized IPTO and DARPA towards a new generation of computational systems with cognitive capabilities, building on artificial intelligence and systems work from many parts of computer science. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1977.
