Course Assignments

May 14 Several people have mailed me saying that the runTests measures the real time and not the user+system time. This is because the time taken to do disk reads and writes are not included in the latter.

May 1 Passing the tests (i.e. no 'diff' with the official output) is no guarantee that your program is correct. You are required to make sure that it meets the assignment specification.

April 25 For grading the final project, I will be looking at the things you tried to improve the performance *and* your explanation as to why it did or didn't help. Also, a discussion of how you chose to tradeoff space for time should be included. Correctness is, naturally, the primary concern. So, please spend some time in the actual writeup.

April 23 A couple of things not mentioned in assignment handout.

For debugging purposes, you can run the driver directly. Each data set has two parts. To run the driver of data set 3 (say), do
driver 3 1
to run the first part, and
driver 3 1 -c
to run the second part.
The 'runTest' script just generates the output of correctness run to two files - out and result. To make sure that your program worked correctly, you have to run 'diff' with the output my program generated which is in /u/cs318/final/Data.
The usage of runTest is 'runTest [test-number]'. If the test number is not specified, it runs it on all the data sets.

April 22: Turn in the final project as assignment 5.

April 1: Assignment 4 is now available. The results that I get for data sets 0, 1 and 2 are given in the table below. BTW, in case you are wondering, this is a real assignment and not a aprils fool joke :).

March 12: The LRU number for data1 is 248 and not 249. Thanks to everyone who pointed it out.

March 9: data0 through data4 are now available in /u/cs318/3 . The results that I get for data sets 0 and 1 are

Feb 28: We are granting an extension on Problem set 2 till Monday. So the assignment is due on Monday night at 11:59 PM.

Feb 23: Starting with Problem Set 2, you will be submitting your assignments online. You should include a brief README file in your submission explaining what you did in the assignment. You don't have to submit any hardcopy. To submit an assignment (on Phoenix),
