A Study of Spectral Effects Using Synthetic Radiography

Abstract

The Dual-Axis Radiographic HydroTest facility (DARHT) under construction at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a next-generation hydrodynamic facility. Simulated radiographs provide a valuable tool for optimizing and predicting DARHT's performance.

We have developed a computer simulation of the radiographic process, called SYN_IMG3. It simulates a radiograph of a user-defined object, utilizing Bremsstrahlung photon spectra, photon cross sections, and blur and noise models.

We describe SYN_IMG3's model and study effects of incident photon energy spectra on radiograph reconstruction. We also present plots of Bremsstrahlung filtration through uranium and aluminum.
