CONSTITUTION OF THE PRINCETON UNIVERSITY BRIDGE CLUB

Proclaimed October 15th, 1997

Article I. Purpose, Structure, and Membership

1. The Princeton University Bridge Club ("the Club") is a student organization of Princeton University that exists to provide an opportunity for students and others from the Princeton community to play and learn bridge informally.

2. The Membership of the Club shall be defined as those individuals who have participated in at least at least three regular meetings of the Club, including at least two meetings within the last six weeks. Winter and summer breaks shall not be counted in determining Membership.

Article II. Officers, Responsibilities, Expenditures

1. The officers of the Club shall be: the President and the Treasurer.

2. The President shall be responsible for the general management of the Club, including: organizing and promoting the Club's activities, managing the Club's finances, maintaining the Club's University recognition as a student organization, and maintaining all property of the Club. All expenditures must be approved by the President.

3. The Treasurer shall be responsible for raising funds for the Club and for keeping records of the Club's income and expenditures. The Treasurer shall report on the Club's finances at the beginning of each semester and at the request of any Member.

4. The Membership may establish by-laws to direct any aspect of the management of the Club, in accordance with the rest of this Constitution. The By-Laws shall be recorded as an appendix to this Constitution.

5. This constitution shall be publicly available (e.g., on the World Wide Web) and shall be distributed to members at least once per year (e.g., by e-mail).

Article III. Elections, Terms of Office, Vacancies

1. Regular elections of officers shall occur once per academic year, at an elections meeting that shall occur after the fall midterm break and before the end of the fall term. The President shall decide and announce the date of the elections meeting before fall break and at least three weeks before the elections meeting.

2. All aspects of an elections meeting shall be subject to the whim of an Elections Dictator, constrained only by the limits of his or her imagination and the provisions of this Constitution. The position of Elections Dictator shall be occupied by the President (or the Treasurer, if the President plans to run for office; or a willing appointee of the President, if both the President and the Treasurer plan to run for office); the Elections Dictator may not be a candidate for office.

3. Only undergraduate Members who are currently enrolled at Princeton and plan to remain enrolled through the end of the following fall term are eligible to be President or Treasurer. No person may be President and Treasurer simultaneously.

4. All Members shall be eligible to vote in elections. All individuals wishing to be placed on the ballot for one or more offices shall notify the Elections Dictator at least one week prior to elections. The method of voting in all elections shall be approval voting. Voting shall be by secret ballot. Vote tallies shall be public. Elections for all contested offices shall occur simultaneously. If a person wins both offices, he or she shall become President and shall be withdrawn from the race for Treasurer.

5. Each officer shall remain in office until his or her successor is elected or until he or she resigns or is impeached. Presidents leaving office after completing their full term shall acquire the title of Paramount Leader. The President may bestow other honorary titles, as he or she sees fit.

6. If the office of President becomes vacant, the Treasurer shall become President or appoint a new President. If the office of Treasurer becomes vacant, the President shall appoint a new Treasurer. If the offices of President and Treasurer are simultaneously vacant, the member with the greatest number of honorary titles shall assume the role of Elections Dictator, interested members shall declare their candidacies, and a special election meeting to fill both offices shall be held as soon as the Elections Dictator sees fit, in accordance with 2-4, above.

Article IV. By-Laws, Impeachment, Amendment

1. Proposals to amend the By-Laws may be initiated by any Member. Such a proposal must be submitted in writing to the President and may be considered immediately if at least 12 Members, including the President, are present. If not considered immediately, the proposal shall be announced to the Membership and considered at the next regular Club meeting. A majority vote shall be required for passage.

2. Proposals to impeach an officer may be initiated by any two Members. Such proposals must be submitted to the President or Treasurer in writing and shall be announced to the Membership at least one week before being considered. A majority vote shall be required for impeachment.

3. Proposals to amend this Constitution may be initiated by any three Members. Such proposals must be submitted to the President in writing and shall be announced to the Membership at least one week before being considered. A three-fourths vote shall be required for passage.
