Linguistics

In Fall 2014, I took an introductory linguistics class at Cornell. I became enamored with the field, mainly because it was fun to—as a wise friend put it—”learn odd facts about odd languages”. In my senior year at Cornell, I became more interested in the field, and began hunting for resources to teach myself more about linguistics so that I could have a scientific foundation on which to base language-learning and analysis (another hobby of mine).

In mid-2017, I began compiling together a curriculum to teach myself the material from scratch. I initially chose The Ohio State University’s classic textbook to revise the introductory material, but I soon realized that each chapter in the handbook was basically offered as a separate class altogether at Cornell.

Ultimately, I decided to pool together several textbooks and use each chapter in OSU’s textbook as a summary of an entire semester’s worth of material. I am currently (albeit slowly) trudging through in this fashion, supplementing each chapter with the raw source texts from the semester-long classes. The notes below are the byproduct of my efforts. Many of the later chapters are still forthcoming, so I will try to update this listing as often as I can. An overview of the course structure and goals is also available. My hope is to eventually compile a comprehensive collection of notes on linguistics from which one can completely teach himself or herself the tenets of modern linguistic theory.
