Speaker: Brian Bershad, Google Title: Google After Web Search -- The Other 4.99998 Exabytes Abstract: Google's search infrastructure is making it easy for people everywhere to access lots and lots of web data. As the company goes into its second decade, it is transitioning from "Search and Ads" to "Search, Ads, and Applications." In this talk, I'll describe this transition, some of its technological implications for systems, and a few areas for high-impact research. Bio: Dr. Brian Bershad is the Director for Google's R&D office in Seattle. Prior to joining Google, he was a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Washington. He received his Bachelor's Degree (1986) in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California at Berkeley. He received his M.S. (1989) and Ph.D. (1990) degrees in Computer Science from the University of Washington. Prior to joining the UW faculty, he was on faculty at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. Dr. Bershad received an NSF Presidential Young Investigator award in 1990, an ONR Young Investigator Award in 1994, an NSF Presidential Faculty Fellow Award in 1994, and the ACM/SIGOPS Mark Weiser Award in 2004. He is a member of the IEEE and ACM. He has been active in the venture community since 1997. In 2006, he co-founded Illumita Inc, and served as CEO through mid 2007. He has been at Google since October 2007.
