Frequently Asked Questions
- Is PICASso a Ph.D. program?
The PICASso program will be a certificate program, not a Ph.D. degree-granting program. Students in the program will receive their Ph.D. degrees from a home department (e.g., computer science, biology, etc.).
- How do I apply?
In most cases, students will apply to the PICASso program at the end of their first year of graduate school in a Princeton department. In exceptional cases, students may be admitted directly to the PICASso program, in conjunction with admission to a Ph.D. program in a home department at Princeton. For more information on which departments at Princeton are currently involved in PICASso and how to contact specific department representatives, click here.
- Could you say more about the program's requirements?
Only students pursuing the Ph.D. degree are eligible for PICASso fellowships. There are no additional requirements for acceptance to the PICASso program beyond those necessary to gain admission to your home department. For more information about general admissions to Princeton graduate programs, click here. Once admitted, there are a number additional requirements.
- How is this program different from the Program in Applied and Computational Mathematics (PACM)?
PACM is a Ph.D. program focused on mathematics for science and engineering applications. PICASso does not grant degrees, only certificates, so that all students need to be admitted to the graduate school through a home department. PICASso is designed to train students who want to use computational methods to solve important problems in other disciplines (e.g., biology, astrophysics, geosciences, etc.).
- I am not a US citizen, but I would like to participate in the PICASso program. Is that possible?
Stipend support is currently available only to U.S. citizens or permanent residents. However, we expect that many non-residents will participate in PICASso. For these students, funding may be available from other sources.
