Lab 1
Part 1

Lab 1: Windows, Unix and the Internet, or
E-mail for Credit

By the end of this lab, you will be able to:

Welcome to the first lab for COS 111: Computers and Computing! In this lab, you'll learn how to use Windows and Unix to open and close programs, how to check your email, how to browse the web, and how to ftp (transfer) files across a network. At the end, you'll be asked to submit, through email, the text of an email message you've received.

Don't be discouraged if you seem to know more or less than the other students around you. If you don't know much about computing, follow the steps in order and feel free to ask a TA for assistance at any time. If, on the other hand, there are exercises which you already know how to do, then skip them and move on. If you've never used a computer before, then find a TA to help you get started and be prepared to spend a little more time this week than you will for future labs.

For now, find an empty computer and follow the next instructions to log onto Windows NT.
