The second exam will be distributed Wednesday Dec.14 after
class
and will be due on Friday Dec. 16 at 5:00PM. It will cover
the
material of the entire course to date, but will emphasize the
second
five week: from "Information Retrieval" through
"Transactions"
and "Crash Recovery". The exam is open book with the
same
restrictions on reference materials as for the first exam.
The first exam will be distributed Wednesday Nov. 9 after class and
will be due on Friday Nov 11 at 5:00PM. It will cover the
material of the first half of the semester through "XML and the tree
model" (10/17 & 10/19). You may find the first exam of the 2008 offering of 597A
helpful
in
preparing
for
this exam, but there is no guarantee the exam this
year will look the same.
The exam is open-book, but the reference materials you are
allowed to
use while taking the first exam are limited to the
following:
class notes posted on the
“Schedule and Readings” page of the Web site for the
course.(Check the “Schedule
and Readings” page for updates.)
the problem set statements
and
solutions posted on the course Web site,
your personal
notes and graded problem set submissions,
the course
textbook: Raghu Ramakrishnan and Johannes Gehrke, Database
Management
Systems, Third Edition, McGraw-Hill, 2003.
other reading for weeks 1- 5 on the "Schedule and Readings"
page
(primarily in Silberschatz et. al., Database System
Concepts,
Sixth Edition, McGraw-Hill, 2011).
No other materials are allowed. Also, you are NOT
allowed
to use online database interfaces.
