44 & X [

Acacia [

[19/30]
I am tempted to characterize Acacia as a "poor man's 44 & X," but of course there is nothing "cheap" about their New American menu. I am also tempted to give Acacia's score a boost due to the fact that they actually gave me a medium-rare steak (overcooking is all too common these days; see Mediterra), but of course a medium-rare steak of mediocre quality is not much better. In the end, the only response I can commit to is "meh": the food is already but certainly not worth the price.

The best Portuguese food in New York can be found in the West Village at Alfama. The Portugese are generally known to have both quality seafood and quality game, which is not very common. Alfama's stone-grilled filet mignon is a treat, and their roasted Monkfish is also quite good. I recommend avoiding the desserts though as they are substantially overpriced relative to both quality and quantity.

Sadly I do not recall what I had for a main dish, but I do remember that it was an explosion of tastes. Given my experience at Alma, I am rather surprised that Cuban cooking is not more widespread. The chocolate cigars [sic] simply must be experienced. The cigars were made of different types of chocolate and the matches were made out of pure sugar -- it looked awesome and tasted even better.

The main dishes are variable (the Chicken Paprikash is delicious whereas the Pierogi is only mediocre) but that probably has more to do with my disinterest in East-European cuisine. The desserts, however, are the best in Ann Arbor - very good indeed!

The regulars are very loyal to this somewhat stuffy French restaurant on California Ave. The food is rather expensive (upwards of $30 for a main dish) for the serving sizes, but the deserts were pastry as art. Ideal place to take the date you wish to impress, but make sure she's one of those modern girls who insists on paying for her food.

Not merely the "best" seafood in Princeton, BP holds its own against most seafood joints in the city as well. I recommend skipping dessert in favor of the appetizers - the lobster cakes are delectable. Take note, however, that BP does not take reservations and as the line is always long, I highly recommend that you come early or prepare for a 45 minutes wait.

Cafe Brioche lies next to Jeanie's Cafe on California Ave, and since they are both always busy, I decided they were worth a try. Turns out, they're not. Chez Loma serves good French food, but I still walked away somewhat dissatisfied. I think it is partly due to being overpriced, but the dishes themselves weren't very inspiring either. The Saumon Fumé was tasty and well-prepared, but the sauce was plain. The Alaskan halibut was likewise good yet still plain. I will reserve judgment until I've visited a second time, but until then I would only recommend Loma for those with no financial considerations.

The food at this French Moroccan Murray Hill join was reasonably tasty. Unfortunately the service was quite poor. The waiter had mixed up my order and made a rack of lamb instead of duck. I can forgive an honest mistake, and the waiter politely took the food away. Later he returned with more conviction, however, and simply put the plate in front of me. I told him that I still didn't think this was duck---which, for those of you who haven't seen it, looks quite differently from lamb---but he insistedthat it was indeed duck. So I sat there dumbfounded and somewhat amused for a while until my fellow guests corrected the gutsy waiter. While it makes for an amusing story, it is not one I am likely to seek to relive.

Maya [
1191 1st Ave and 65th St, New York, NY] [212-585-1818] [Mexican]
[20/30]
Maya serves up gourmet Mexican that is anything but usual. No doubt you pay more for the art on your plate than the portion-sizes, but the food is certainly good. It is a fun place, but not worth the prices (upwards of $30 for a main dish).

Mediterra [
29 Hulfish St, Princeton, NJ] [609-252-9680] [Italian, New American]
[19/30]
Mediterra has excellent ambiance, reasonable apéritifs, good service, and some tasty appetizers. Unfortunately, that is not nearly enough to overcome overcooked meat. Others seemed to be satisfied with their main dishes, but I cannot forgive a restaurant that gives me a well-done steak when I ordered it rare - especially not when the restaurant charges top dollar ($30) for said steak. Very disappointing.

Mediterranean Wraps [

Go here for cheap, filling, tasty, though somewhat greasy, Mediterranean wraps. The proprietor is as charming as they come, and when he recommends the pistachio Baklava, I suggest you take him up on it.

A very nice restaurant in the East Village that offers basic seafood fare at very reasonable prices. Perhaps best-known for the "fish fortune-tellers", I say the food itself offers plenty appeal.

I have only visited this quaint hole-in-the-wall once (on my guardians' wedding anniversary, no less), but it left a solid impression. It is another basic New England seafood restaurant, but the cozy atmosphere and impeccably fresh raw materials made for a lovely evening. Keep in mind that it is a BYOB, so bring a dry white to match the luscious dishes.

The worst service I've had at any restaurant in NYC. It took an eternity to put bread on the table, then they wouldn't take our order, and when I gestured to the hostess requesting service she only shook her head. She then talked to our waiter, who looked over at our table, laughed, and walked in a different direction. At this point we got up and left, and I don't intend to ever return.

Pearl Oyster Bar [
18 Cornelia St and West 4th St, New York, NY] [212-691-8211] [Seafood]
[23/30]
Pearl Oyster Bar is a famous NYC seafood restaurant. It is a classical New England-style no-frills and small seafood restaurant that is surprisingly affordable. The primary frustration I had was not that the wait was around the corner (they dont take reservation), but that this caused the waitress to rush us through everything from ordering to eating. A good meal is greatly diminished if rushed, so I hope our experience was an aberration.

Excellent Danish chocolatier near Luxembourg Gardens. And since they are Danish, they excel at the marzipan-related delights. I am saddened to report that they seemed to have reduced the variety lately, however, which has removed a few of my favorites.

Decent northern Italian at decent prices - except for the specials, which can be overly priced. The pastas are the best deal. The Tuna Nicoise is a frustrating apetizer: it could've been so good, if they'd only mixed the separate tastes for you..

An uptown place with a vibrant feel, Ruby Foos had an atmosphere that rubbed off. The Thai-Japanese-dim sum fusion menu is reasonable priced ($15 per main dish) and with some exciting jewels hidden inside. A good place to take some friends before hitting the bars.
